Imagine walking through a living museum where every tree, every bloom, and every creature tells a story of resilience and beauty. The Stephen F. Austin Gardens is located under the pines, an unassuming haven nestled in the heart of East Texas and Texas’ oldest city, Nacogdoches. This little city is over 300 years old and is called the “Garden Capital of Texas” for good reason. Stephen F. Austin University specializes in forestry and agriculture, so you’ll find an astonishing collection of gardens, azalea landscapes, trails, a nature center, and a nursery. It is one of my favorite hidden gems for its beauty, enchanted grounds, and diversity.
See the map through the legendary neighborhoods of Nacogdoches, where historic homes and streets come to life with vivid spring color. Three distinct trails begin at the Charles Bright Visitor Center at 200 E. Main St., on the downtown square. The trails tour you through neighborhoods, gardens, museums, and landmarks.
